The ancient city of Idyma was established on the slopes of Küçük Asartepe, located to the north of Kozlukuyu (Gökova) village within the borders of Akyaka district of Muğla province.
The name Idyma was listed in the tax records of Attic-Delos Naval Union in 453-452 B.C. The ceramic finds presented here are from the Idyma Castle Excavations (2021-2022) which is located on the Azmak coast of Akyaka. The ceramics mainly come from the cistern system that led to Azmak stream and from main towers and architectural units of the Castle. Although the construction of the Castle is dated to Byzantine Period, the ceramic evidence has proven that settlement in this region dates back to the Roman period. The ceramic research has shown the city has benefited on the maritime trade route between Aegean and Mediterranean from the Archaic period and onwards. This article presents Roman and Late Roman fine ware ceramics as well as regional ware groups.
