Abstract

Along the regional road, in a small area between the villages of Hnabert and Verin Artashat (Ararat region, Armenia), on the territory of the Museum-Reserve ‘Capital City Dvin’, archaeological excavations were carried out in 2023. This territory, within the framework of a joint project of the Tourism Committee, the World Bank, and the Territorial Development Fund of Armenia planned to construct a museum. It was assumed that the exploratory excavation in 2023 would clarify the presence or absence of an archaeological layer under the foundation of the future museum. In the spring of 2023, extensive archaeological material was discovered. The archaeological site ‘Capital City Dvin’ is a complex and multi-layered monument. Based on the results of the excavations in 2023, it turned out that the specificity of this area, unlike others, is that there is one archaeological layer. It is dated by the destructive earthquake of 893, traces of which are recorded in the excavation. The excavations discovered interesting archaeological material, the bulk of which is ceramics. These are ceramics shards of the 9th century, which have analogs among the ceramics of the Medieval East. The article provides a detailed analysis of the glazed ceramics of the 9th century from the 2023 excavation area.
