Abstract

Ancient Koroneia (Boeotia, central Greece) was the last site surveyed by the Ancient Cities of Boeotia Project, between 2005 and 2011, under the direction of John Bintliff. An abundance of artefacts was collected that attests local pottery manufacture during the Hellenistic to Late Roman periods. This paper preliminarily presents this evidence. Manufacture began in the (Early) Hellenistic period, and is best represented by fragments of moulds for the manufacture of mouldmade (Megarian) relief bowls and misfired fragments of such vessels. The evidence is however richest for the Early to Late Roman periods. Wasters represent a broad functional range, especially open tablewares and smaller closed vessels. Of interest are fragments of kiln wall, found in an area where geophysical research picked up an anomaly, possibly a pottery kiln. The paper concludes with a first attempt to contextualise these finds in a Boeotian and wider framework of stylistic traditions and ceramic exchange.
