Abstract

A systematic interest in stamps from the Late Roman/Early Byzantine to Late Byzantine periods has arisen only in the last two decades. This paper concerns a comprehensive presentation of all the Late Roman stamped amphora types and both the religious and administrative stamps they bear. We focus on the stamps with administrative content and meaning, found on LR 1 and LR 13 amphorae. In particular, we will present, as a case study, an overview as well as new information on the production of LR 13 amphorae, which were often double stamped by the state, with a ‘main’ stamp bearing the bust of the emperor and the inscription of the eparch of the islands and a ‘secondary’ stamp which included official inscriptions, monograms and interesting abbreviations, such as the ‘ȣ’ ligature of the ounce (οὐγγία), as we suggest.
