The Amphorae of Roman Ephesus. A new vision from new evidence and new ideas

In 2013, Tamas Bezeczky published his book “The Amphorae of Roman Ephesus”, presenting for the first time a complete catalogue of the most important amphorae in some interesting Ephesian contexts (mainly in the Tetragonos Agora and in some small contexts from the upper Agora and Terrace Houses). This impressive work should be considered as the basis for all future studies concerning late Hellenistic and Roman Imperial amphorae, not only in Ephesos, but in the whole Aegean region.
Even so, the revision of the pottery of some contexts in Ephesos as published by specialists such as Sabine Ladstätter, Alice Waldner and Recep Meriç, combined with the studies of material from new contexts during the last years, have enlarged our knowledge about the forms, quantities and trade connexions of Ephesos during the Roman and Byzantine periods, making it imperative to pose some new hypotheses as a result.
