El siglo XIX trajo consigo una afluencia de peregrinos, exploradores y aventureros a la Tierra Santa. La mayoría de los viajeros se mantuvo en las rutas tradicionales de peregrinación, aunque otros se aventuraron en regiones que pocos europeos se atrevían a visitar, enfrentándose a condiciones difíciles, poblaciones hostiles en algunos lugares y los peligros del camino. Muchos de ellos publicaron sus testimonios en volúmenes textuales, cartográficos, artísticos y, con el tiempo, fotográficos, que alcanzaron a amplios públicos que, de otro modo, solo conocían la región a través de los textos bíblicos e históricos de la Antigüedad.
Además de los lugares sagrados, muchos autores occidentales se refirieron a los aspectos culturales y sociales de las comunidades que encontraron. Uno de los fenómenos que les resultó más intrigante, desconcertante y a la vez perturbador fue la obsesión por los tesoros y depósitos ocultos, guardados en secreto para su protección en tiempos de calma o de turbulencia. Las numerosas referencias en los relatos de viaje tanto a tesoros antiguos como recientes reflejan las perspectivas de los europeos y estadounidenses de la época sobre este peculiar asunto y, a través de él, sobre el panorama más amplio de tradiciones, costumbres, ideas, actitudes y modos de vida en una de las provincias más complejas del Imperio otomano.
