Abstract

Hellenistic Marisa, the Greek form of the Hebrew name Maresha mentioned several times in the Bible, is located in the Shephelah, the foothills of the Judean Mountains, 40 km to the south-west of Jerusalem. The Hellenistic city was inhabited by Greeks, Sidonians, indigenous Idumeans until captured and completely destroyed by Hyrcanus I in 112/111 BCE or shortly thereafter. Marisa comprises a substantial number of subterranean complexes, most filled with unstratified anthropogenic debris, representing either habitation material dumped from the surface or from collapsed dwellings.
