Abstract

This paper describes the results of the first season of fieldwork that was undertaken at the Early Islamic site of Kadhima (Kāẓimah) in Kuwait as part of a joint project between the National Council of Culture, Arts and Letters of Kuwait and Durham University in December 2009 and January 2010. The site is described as is the fieldwork, and a brief summary of some of the preliminary findings is given. The eighth-century AD site appears to have consisted of a scatter of small settlements on the coastal plain at the back of Kuwait Bay. Although the sites are small and poorly preserved, they appear to contain considerable evidence related to life in the Early Islamic period. The results of an archaeological survey of the surrounding area are also described. These suggest that the site may have been surrounded by seasonal nomadic settlements of which very little trace remains.
